2D ultrasound technology is used to produce 2-dimensional images of what is happening inside the mother's and baby's bodies.  Images are in black and white and have the same level of detail as a photographic negative.  The gender of the baby can usually be determined as early as 16 weeks  Although it can be done at any time during pregnancy, 2D imaging is ideal for expectant mothers between 16 and 20 weeks gestation.
